Why rest feels elusive, even when you are exhausted

When life places constant demands on you through work pressure, family responsibilities and health challenges,  or you’re holding on to difficult past experiences, your nervous system learns to stay on high alert. You are doing the best you can, but over time, it’s all too easy forget how to rest and to look after your own needs.

You can feel absolutely exhausted, yet are unable to switch off when you do lie down, as your mind keeps racing. Your system has been trying to keep you safe and productive for so long that it’s disconnected you from your inherent calm and stillness, or the place where your discernment and inner wisdom resides.

Restorative Yoga is the use of props to support the body into positions of ease and comfort to facilitate health and relaxation.

Your nervous system has been under constant pressure. With a little support and some self-compassion, it can learn to settle.

From that place of deep relaxation, it becomes easier to dial down intrusive thoughts and listen more intuitively to your higher inner voice. The grounded, insightful part of you that knows something isn’t serving you. The part that recognises when the burdens placed on you no longer serve your best interests and you need to take a step back and wind down.

It's not selfish to take time for yourself and focus on YOU. When you change your self-talk, nurture and embody your talents, others see them too. And little by little, you become comfortable and confident to grow into more of who you really are - and to serve others on your own terms, not because you feel you have to.

If you're feeling frazzled, burnt out or trapped by PTSD, this work can help

How many of these stressors are impacting your wellbeing?

  • You are always on, always available, and your body and mind never fully switch off.

  • There is so much going on, you feel stretched too thin, and would love more time for yourself.

  • You are dealing with health challenges, chronic illness or trauma and need to look after yourself more.

  • The boundaries around work have dissolved,  affecting your health, your sleep and  relationships.

  • You have always been the one who copes, who holds things together, who gives, and need someone to finally take care of YOU.

  • You've been stressed-out for so long, you don't know how to get out of the spiral.

What happens to my mind and body when I practise Restorative Yoga?

Physiological benefits

  • Activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the body's rest-and-repair mode, supporting recovery from sustained stress

  • Reduces cortisol, the primary stress hormone associated with anxiety, poor sleep, immune suppression and chronic fatigue

  • Lowers heart rate and blood pressure

  • Eases muscle tension and postural pain

  • Improves sleep quality by helping the nervous system establish a calmer, safer baseline

  • Promotes healthy digestive and organ function with intentionally chosen asana

Mental and emotional benefits:

  • Reduces feelings of anxiety and depression

  • Cultivates body awareness and the ability to listen and respond to your signals

  • Creates a felt sense of safety in the body, which is particularly significant for those recovering from illness, surgery, injury or trauma

  • Develops a more compassionate relationship with yourself

  • Brings clarity and insight when the habitual noise of the thinking mind is given space to settle

“I’ve learned that restorative yoga isn’t just about the poses. It’s about being restored — like when you lovingly restore something that’s been worn down. I’ve never been the kind of person to ask for help, but allowing someone to support you, guide you, care for you, is such a powerful part of the healing process.”  Sandie, Relax & Renew® client

Relax and Renew®

Relax and Renew® Restorative Yoga was created by Judith Hanson Lasater, a student of BKS Iyengar and one of the world’s most respected and influential yoga teachers of the last fifty years. A pioneer in both integrating yoga into daily life, while teaching its therapeutic applications, Judith has spent decades studying, teaching and refining the use of props to support the body into positions of deep, restorative rest. Her approach is grounded in both the ancient wisdom of yogic philosophy, anatomy and the modern science of the nervous system. Her work has led the way Restorative Yoga is understood and taught around the world.

After qualifying as a yoga teacher, I went on to study intensively with Judith, and her daughter Lizzie Lasater, for a further six years as part of my continued professional development. I am a certified Relax and Renew® teacher at Level 1 and Level 2, which is the gold standard in international Restorative Yoga training. At Judith’s invitation, I am also a teaching assistant on the Level 1 Relax and Renew® training, supporting other yoga teachers on their learning journey.

In this programme we will cover

Yoga Pose Practice
"After so many months of sustained pressure and irritation, it was profoundly calming to rest in this way, to drift into a state of safety, where all mental clutter was swept aside. I love how nurturing and peace-giving resting in this way is. I feel I will be able to use these methods on an ongoing basis in my journey of self-care and healing, and that is absolutely invaluable."

About Liza

I'm Liza Patoux, and I work with people who are coping with challenges that life has thrown at them, from work stress, to burnout and recovery from illness and trauma, so they can feel steady and safe again,

I trained in Restorative Yoga with Judith Hanson Lasater, completing both her Level 1 and Level 2 Relax and Renew® certifications, and have spent years studying the physiology of relaxation, breathwork and nervous system regulation.

More than that, I have lived this work. I know what it is to be under sustained pressure, to lose yourself in managing everything else, and to need a way back to yourself that is embedded in self-compassion and kindness

My approach is grounded, evidence-informed and deeply caring, drawing on the therapeutic application of Restorative Yoga, breathwork and the Relax and Renew® method developed by Judith Hanson Lasater. I teach rest as a skill we all deserve, not a luxury or an indulgence. And I believe that when we create the right conditions for physical rest, we become calmer, more recharged, gain insight and find our buoyancy again.

My values are health, positivity and happiness. And that is what I want for you too.
