Take control of your anxiety about dental appointments

You know you need to visit the dentist. You might have been telling yourself that for months or even years.

Maybe you have a niggling tooth that needs attention. Perhaps it has been so long that you’re worried you’ll need dental work or feel embarrassed about the state of your teeth, and that embarrassment has become its own reason not to go.

Perhaps the moment you even think about picking up the phone to book an appointment, something in you tightens. Your mind fills with the sound of the drill, the smell of the surgery or the feeling of being tipped back in a chair with no easy way out.

So you don't book. The months pass and the longer it goes on, the harder it feels to go back.

If you relate to these fears about visiting the dentist, you share this anxiety with millions of others. According to the UK Government's Adult Oral Health Survey, 15% of UK adults experience extreme dental anxiety, (the clinical threshold for a phobia) and a further 40% experience moderate anxiety.1

That means more than half the adult population approaches dental care with real, significant fear.

Research has found that people with dental phobia avoid treatment for an average of 12.7 years before seeking any support.2

Sometimes this is because the fear feels too big to address, sometimes it can be because of embarrassment or shame.

The cost of staying away

Dental anxiety has a way of compounding itself the longer you leave it. What begins as dread about a single appointment can, over time, grow into something that shapes far more than just your dental health.

The impact of avoiding the dentist

People with dental phobia are twice as likely to have urgent dental conditions as regular attenders.3  Research by King's College London, analysing data from almost 11,000 people, found that those with dental phobia had significantly higher rates of tooth decay and tooth loss. They were also more likely to request extractions rather than treatment, because getting it over with quickly felt more manageable than sitting through a procedure.4

The longer avoidance continues, the more complex and costly treatment becomes. And the more complex treatment becomes, the more daunting the idea of going feels.

This is a common cycle. And I can help you break it.

Which of these are affecting you?

Hypnotherapy for dental phobias

This is a personalised solution-focused hypnotherapy service designed to help you feel calm, steady and in control when you visit the dentist.

It is not about forcing yourself to go. You don't have to grit your teeth and brave your way through an appointment. You can gently teaching your nervous system a new way to respond, that's sustainable, so that booking, attending and sitting in the chair feels manageable rather than overwhelming.

Most people find that around six sessions are helpful, though this varies by individual. Some notice a meaningful change straight away, while others enjoy the ongoing support and reassurance at their own pace.

Your programme will be tailored to you, your specific triggers, and the goal you are working toward.

How solutions focused hypnotherapy helps dental anxiety

Hypnotherapy guides you into a deeply relaxed, focused state. It’s not sleep or a state of unconsciousness, but a calm, receptive awareness in which your conscious mind and intrusive thoughts quieten and we can work directly with your subconscious.

In this state, we gently retrain your nervous system's automatic fear response. We reframe unhelpful past beliefs and help your mind and body create new, calmer associations with the dental environment, so that the triggers that currently send you into panic lose their grip on you.

The evidence supports this approach. NHS England's Clinical Guide for Dental Anxiety Management explicitly recognises hypnosis as a behavioural management technique for dental anxiety, alongside CBT and NLP.5 A systematic review of 19 clinical trials found that 70% of audio-hypnosis studies showed significant anxiety reduction for dental patients, with fMRI evidence confirming that hypnosis measurably reduces activity in the amygdala (the brain's threat detection centre).6  A further meta-analysis found that 75% of patients experienced significant pain reduction through hypnosis during dental and medical procedures.7

As Dr. Ilay Maden, former Harley Street dentist and co-founder of Postcura, told me, hypnotherapy can help you "rewire your fear into confidence" before your dental visit.8

This process involves:

Understanding your fear

We begin by exploring what specifically triggers your anxiety. Is it the sound of the drill? Do you have a phobia of needles or fear of pain? Is it about feeling a loss of control? Or do you feel ashamed about not having attended for so long? Everyone's fear is different, and your programme is built around yours

Retraining the fear response

Using guided relaxation, visualisation and solution-focused techniques, we work with your subconscious to create new, calmer associations with the dental environment, with tools to manage the situation. Your nervous system begins to learn that the dental chair does not mean danger.

Building practical tools for the appointment itself

You will learn simple, effective breathing and grounding techniques you can use in real situations, such as in the waiting room, in the  dentist's chair, at the moment anxiety rises. These are tools you'll use for life.

Mental rehearsal of your dental journey

In the safety of hypnosis, you will rehearse attending a dental appointment, calmly, with your breathing steady and your body settled. Your mind begins to encode this as an expected experience.

You remain fully in control throughout every session. Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process, and you are an active participant in your own progress.

FAQs

I have not been to the dentist in years. Will you judge me for that? Not at all, and neither will I ever make you feel you should have come sooner. Avoidance is a natural and understandable response to fear. The fact that you are here suggests you are ready to consider a different path. That is what matters.

My fear is about needles specifically. Can hypnotherapy help with that? Yes. Needle phobia is one of the most common components of dental anxiety, cited in government research by 32% of people with dental fear. We can work specifically on your response to injections as part of your programme.

What if hypnotherapy does not work for me? Hypnotherapy has a robust evidence base for dental anxiety specifically, with NHS England recognising it as an effective behavioural intervention. That said, I will never make promises I cannot keep. Every person is different, and we will work together to find the approach that feels right for you.

I had a really bad experience at the dentist as a child. Is that different? This is one of the most common origins of dental phobia, and it is something hypnotherapy is well-suited to address. If there is a specific traumatic memory at the root of your fear, I also offer Hypno-EMDR, which combines hypnotherapy with a powerful trauma-processing approach.

A note on working alongside your dentist

Hypnotherapy works best as part of a collaborative approach. If you have a dentist you trust but cannot bring yourself to attend, this work can help you get to the point where you can. If you need to find a dentist who specialises in working with anxious patients, I can help you think about that too.

According to Dr. Maden "Open communication with your dentist, calming techniques like music and hypnotherapy can help shift fear into a more comfortable experience."9 This is the spirit in which this work is offered - as support that sits alongside good dental care, not instead of it.

You can read more about the connection between oral health and hypnotherapy in this conversation I had with Dr. Ilay Maden: Mind, Mouth and Wellbeing: How oral health and hypnotherapy go together.
