What is Hypnotherapy?

Building Tools for Positive Change

Hypnotherapy helps achieve a focused state of attention, quietening unhelpful thoughts, to set up a positive and receptive state of mind for instilling improvement and change. That might be boosting self-confidence to improve performance, replacing bad habits with better choices or setting yourself up for the peace of mind and contentment you deserve. I work with clients in a personalised way to build a treatment plan tailored for you, using a variety of techniques.

At work, hypnotherapy could give you the confidence boost you need to help you up the career ladder or inject the charisma and presence you need to get more out of your work place. In your wellbeing, it can help you develop balance, become more resilient and develop a positive self-image or healthy life-style. At play, these techniques might improve your performance and confidence in your favourite sport or for a big occasion. Or it could simply offer the support you need in quitting unhelpful habits such as smoking or to master fears and phobias such as flying or spiders.

Combining hypnotic trance with respected therapy techniques, drawn from Behavioural, Cognitive, Analytical and Regression disciplines, as well as Hypno-EMDR, treatment is tailored to individual requirements. Quietening the thoughts in the conscious mind and talking directly to the subconscious mind means that certain traditional therapies can be more effective, with the removal of intrusive thoughts that could be unhelpful in the waking state, instead creating a more responsive environment to help you to change in whatever way is right for you.

Here's What You Need to Know

Have you ever been hypnotised before? Well, you may already know, that Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state which allows us to really focus the mind, or achieve a state of deep relaxation, where you can quieten the thoughts in your active mind. This allows for a really good state of focused attention or concentration, where you can introduce and lay down positive changes or affirmations that can help you. That could mean breaking unhelpful habits or introducing new more positive behaviours that you will find more beneficial.

You can only be hypnotised if you want to be. You will be in control of where we go and what you do. My job is to guide you and it’s your choice how far you want to take it. It really varies from person to person how quickly you can see change. Some people see effects after one session, others like to take things more slowly and build over a few sessions. However, it’s possible for anyone to go into a state of hypnosis. In fact it’s something that we all do several times every day, when we wake up in the morning, just before falling asleep, when we lose ourselves in a good book, film, are entranced in a tv programme, or on a journey that we make every day. The depths of trance, and how quickly we reach them, though might vary from person to person.

There are sometimes common myths and misconceptions surrounding hypnosis. You can’t get stuck in it. You are not handing over self-control. You will not do anything that you wouldn’t do in an alert state and you will never do anything that is against your morals or beliefs.

I might use the word sleep, but you won’t fall asleep and lose awareness. You might feel very relaxed or you might feel very alert as the idea is to get you into a focused state of attention, where you can make positive changes.  We’ll be using a variety of techniques to get you into this state. I’ll be guiding you there and making suggestions, which you can choose to accept.  You may start to feel sleepy and relaxed. Your body or legs might start to feel heavy, or light. So let yourself go with whatever feels right for you. You can’t get stuck in hypnosis. You will be in control. And can know, that should you want to, or need to, you would be able to open your eyes, or wake yourself up easily at any time.
